IRS Data Retrieval Tool

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) transfers your IRS tax information directly into your FAFSA.  This allows our office to verify your tax information.  The eligibility criteria for using the Data Retrieval Tool can be found at (the eligibility criteria are can be seen at https://fafsa.ed.gov/help/irshlp10.htm).  Please note that students or parents who filed their tax returns electronically within the last three weeks, or through the mail within the last 11 weeks, may not be able to use the Data Retrieval Tool until their tax return is fully processed.

To use the Data Retrieval Tool, complete the following steps:

  • Go to fafsa.ed.gov and log in using the student's name and FSA ID
  • Select the "Continue" or "Make a Correction" button
  • Select the Financial Information" tab at the top of the page

Instructions to transfer parent IRS information to the FAFSA:

  1. Go to "Parent Financial Information" page
  2. Answer the questions in the first box to see if you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
  3. If eligible, select which parent is providing the information on the FAFSA
  4. Enter the FSA ID for the parent providing the information
  5. Click "Link to IRS"
  6. Review the information displayed and select the "Transfer My Information into the FAFSA" option
  7. Continue to transfer student data or, if finished, proceed to the Sign and Submit page

Instructions to transfer student IRS information to the FAFSA:

  1. Go to "Student Financial Information" page
  2. Answer the questions in the first box to see if you are eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
  3. If eligible, click "Link to IRS"
  4. Review the information displayed and select the "Transfer My Information into the FAFSA" optin
  5. Proceed to the Sign and Submit Page

Requesting a Tax Return Transcript:

If you are unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you can request a copy of your IRS Tax Return Transcript from the IRS website.  The transcript can be requested online or sent through the mail.  To request the tax return transcript, please visit  https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript or call 1-800-908-9946.  Please note that a tax return transcript will be available between 3-5 weeks after your tax return has been processed by the IRS. Note: A Tax Return Transcript is different from a Tax Account Transcript.  Please make sure you select the tax return transcript when requesting this documentation.
