Merit Based Scholarships

The University of Notre Dame offers a limited number of merit scholarships to admitted first-year students. Recipients demonstrate exceptional accomplishment, leadership, commitment to service, and intellectual promise. Financial need is not a factor unless otherwise noted.

How it Works

Every application for admission is considered for merit scholarships at Notre Dame—there is no separate application to complete unless you are notified that you have been chosen as a merit semi-finalist.

Other Opportunities for Financial Aid

The merit-based scholarships are competitive and there are limited recipients.  Applicants are encouraged to apply for need-based financial aid if affording the costs of a Notre Dame education would pose a financial hardship.  Around 3% of admitted students receive merit aid while need-based financial aid is a possibility for far more students.

Please note: Students who receive both merit scholarship and need-based scholarship from the University are subject to a reduction or elimination of the need-based portion of the financial aid in accordance with federal regulations and institutional policy.
