Study Abroad

Notre Dame students are encouraged to explore the study abroad opportunities offered through Notre Dame Global—Study Abroad, with over 40 locations in more than 20 countries. University-sponsored program costs include Notre Dame tuition, on-campus housing and meals, and other expenses related to studying abroad. Financial aid is adjusted based on the specific cost of the study abroad program to reflect the actual expenses associated with the program. Students enrolled in a study abroad program approved for credit by the University may be considered enrolled at the home institution for federal financial aid purposes. More information is available from Notre Dame Global—Study Abroad.

Cost of Attendance and Covered Expenses

The average cost of attendance for study abroad typically includes tuition, the international program fee, and allowances for books, personal expenses, and transportation. An allowance for transportation is also included, although financial aid may not be disbursed until after the first class day of each semester.

If a student's expenses exceed the average cost of attendance, they may request an increase by submitting documentation of extraordinary expenses to the Office of Financial Aid. These requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis for private student loan eligibility only.

Applicable Aid

Notre Dame Administered Programs: University Scholarships, Department Scholarships, Club Scholarships, Federal Pell Grants, SEO Grants, State Grants, Federal Direct & Notre Dame Subsidized Loans, Private Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Outside Scholarships are transferable.

Non-Notre Dame Administered Programs: Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, Private Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Outside Scholarships are transferable.

Additional student loan eligibility may be available to offset the loss of Federal Work Study or campus employment while studying abroad.

International Study Leave of Absence

  • Notre Dame students granted a leave of absence to attend a study abroad program at another institution should consult with an academic advisor to ensure coursework transferability to Notre Dame.

  • Students may submit a Financial Aid Consortium Agreement to their host institution, allowing Notre Dame to process Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, Federal Direct PLUS Loans for Parents, and private student loans for the host institution.

  • The completed Consortium Agreement must be submitted to the University of Notre Dame Office of Financial Aid before finalizing financial aid or certifying loan applications.

The University of Notre Dame does not provide University Scholarships or Notre Dame Subsidized Loan funds for students attending an international program of study through another institution.

Airfare

Students are responsible for purchasing plane tickets with their own resources. If financial aid eligibility exceeds University charges, students may request a refund for reimbursement after the program starts.

Billing and Refunds

Authorized payers can access billing statements through IRISHPAY, similar to on-campus enrollment. Fall semester bills are issued in mid-July, and spring semester bills in early December. Students or parents should complete the Refund Request Form through insideND. Refunds are processed via direct deposit through IRISHPAY and may not be issued until the first class day of the program.

Summer Study Abroad Financial Aid

  • Financial Assistance: For summer study abroad programs, financial aid is limited to private educational loans or the Federal PLUS (Parent) loan. University Scholarships are not available for summer study abroad.

  • Application Process: To apply for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and CSS Profile before the April 15 priority submission date to be considered for the Federal PLUS Loan. Applications for private educational loans should be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid one month before the start of the summer program.

  • Billing: Students studying internationally in programs ending on or before June 30 will be billed for the summer session in April, while programs ending after July 1 will be billed in May. Payment is due upon receipt of the statement.
