Financial Aid for Study Abroad Programs

Eligibility

Students enrolled in a study abroad program approved for credit by the University may be considered enrolled at the home institution for federal financial aid purposes.

Financial Aid Adjustment

Financial aid is adjusted based on the specific cost of the study abroad program to reflect the actual expenses associated with the program.

Applicable Aid

Notre Dame Administered Programs: University Scholarships, Department Scholarships, Club Scholarships, Federal Pell Grants, SEO Grants, State Grants, Federal Direct & Notre Dame Subsidized Loans, Private Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Outside Scholarships are transferable.

Non-Notre Dame Administered Programs: Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, Private Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Outside Scholarships are transferable.

Covered Expenses

The average cost of attendance typically includes tuition, the international program fee, and allowances for books, personal expenses, and transportation. An allowance for transportation is included, but financial aid may not be disbursed until after the first class day of each semester.

Airfare

Students are responsible for purchasing plane tickets with their own resources. If financial aid eligibility exceeds University charges, students may request a refund for reimbursement after the program starts.

Cost of Attendance Increases

Students may request an increase in their cost of attendance if their expenses exceed the average amount. Documentation of extraordinary expenses must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis for private student loan eligibility only.

Work Study Replacement

Additional student loan eligibility may be available to offset the loss of Federal Work Study or campus employment while studying abroad.

International Study Leave of Absence

  • Notre Dame students granted a leave of absence to attend a study abroad program at another institution should consult with an academic advisor to ensure the coursework will transfer to their program at the University of Notre Dame

  • In order to receive Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Loans, Federal Direct PLUS Loans for Parents, or private student loans while enrolled at the host institution, the student must complete the Consortium Agreement Process.

  • Steps to the Consortium Agreement Process:

      • The University of Notre Dame Consortium Agreement form can be found at https://financialaid.nd.edu/contact/resources/.

      • The student sends the Consortium Agreement to the host institution, who completes the information on the form, then sends the form back to the University of Notre Dame Office of Financial Aid.

      • The deadline for the University of Notre Dame to receive the completed Consortium Agreement is two weeks before the last day of classes at the host institution.

      • The University of Notre Dame Office of Financial Aid will use the information on the Consortium Agreement to determine the student’s eligibility for federal aid and/or private loan eligibility .

The University of Notre Dame does not provide University Scholarships for students attending an international program of study through another institution.
